A Little IBM SELECTRIC History
IBM announced its first IBM Selectric, which featured a stationary carriage, "typematic" or repeating keys and 88 character interchangeable typing elements.
The IBM Selectric II was announced in 1971 and featured all the innovations of the Selectric I, but in addition included the half-backspace and express backspace (boy did that come in handy!). Then, in 1973, the Selectric II was enhanced to include the correction key which enabled lift off/cover up error correction. This version also included the selective ribbon mechanism.
The keyboards of the IBM Selectrics are said to be the the best keyboard ever invented.
Though these incredibly durable machines occupy only a minority of the machine population in today's business world, they have not even come close to outliving their usefulness. Many small offices still rely on them for quick and dependable output. They are still prevelent in many households as well. LOS ALTOS BUSINESS MACHINES has a large inventory of SELECTRICS and all SUPPLIES pertaining to them. We continue to have demand for and so continue to repair and service these relevant typewriters.
